Alma Farrell, with the Maricopa Rotary Club, recently awarded two scholarships to local teens.
Aubrey Chaston, a Desert Winds Middle School eight grade honor student, made the Honor Roll all year long. She is active in school choir, jazz band, and the talent show. She placed first in the 2010 Central Arizona Middle School Math Competition. In her spare time she sings with the Phoenix Girls Chorus and her church choir. At the Desert Winds Middle School Promotion ceremonies, Aubrey received a $250 scholarship and she will be able to use the scholarship to attend Maricopa High School next school term.
Maricopa High School graduate Karla Munoz won the $1000 scholarship from the Rotary Club to be used at her choice of post secondary institution, the University of Arizona. According to Farrell, Karla plans to pursue a career in the medical field to major in physiology and eventually attend medical school to study kinesiology. Karla’s high school activities included Secretary of Key Club, National Honor Society, LINK crew, People Editor of the yearbook, and she played varsity soccer. Outside of school, she volunteered time with Toys for Tots, Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure, and she was a contributor to the communities in Mexico through the Frito Lay hosted events in Mexicali, Baja California, giving food and clothing to the needy. She was the Rotary’s April Student of the Month.
