CASA GRANDE, AZ – Pinal County Supervisor David Snider has been appointed to serve on the recently formed Water Resources Development Commission.

The creation of the Water Resources Commission is a result of legislation passed earlier this year. The bill charges the new commission to examine the current and future water needs of Arizona and make recommendations to guide future legislative and policy deliberations. The Commission is comprised of 15 members who represent a cross section of the state. All were chosen based on their expertise in the area of water resources and water management.

“I am extremely grateful to be invited by Arizona Department of Water Resources Director Herb Guenther to serve as a Commission member with water experts from across the state,” said Supervisor Snider, who is also serving on the Governor’s Blue Ribbon Panel on Water Sustainability. “The task given to us is clear and unequivocal. We must look far into Arizona's future and do what we can to quantify our state's water resources. We will also identify and recommend action steps to be taken now so that we can ensure that our children's, children's children, and generations beyond have access to this precious natural resource.”

According to the legislation, H.B. 2661, the Commission is to assess and project the water needs of each of Arizona’s 15 counties for the next 25, 50, and 100 years. The Commission will also address legal and technical issues associated with water supply use. In their final report to Governor Jan Brewer, the Commission will make recommendations regarding further water studies along with setting other water supply policies and objectives.

The final report is expected to be delivered to the Governor’s office by October 1, 2011.

“There is a lot of work ahead of us,” Supervisor Snider said. “I look forward to helping chart a path to a water sustainable future for Pinal County and the State of Arizona.”
